This community features research by the School of the Environment at Washington State University, combining Earth sciences, ecosystem and natural resource ecology, sustainability sciences and social sciences. The School of the Environment has an active research faculty, conducting research over a wide range of geological, environmental, natural resources and ecosystems. Much faculty and student research takes advantage of excellent local and regional field sites. In addition, a number of current projects are larger in scope and multi-disciplinary and collaborated by dozens of affiliated faculty located at the WSU Campus, at WSU campuses around the state, and at other institutions and agencies.

MANAGEMENT IMPLICATIONS FOR A LACUSTRINE BROOK TROUT POPULATION: AN INVESTIGATION IN AGE PRECISION AND POPULATION DYNAMICS
(2019)Areas in the Columbia River Basin have been impacted by hydroelectric dam developments, requiring some anadromous and resident fish losses to be mitigated with resident fisheries enhancement. Brook Trout are one resident ... -
RECHARGE AND MOBILIZATION OF CRYSTAL MUSH TO PRODUCE AND ERUPT A ZONED MAGMA CHAMBER – THE TSHIREGE MEMBER OF THE BANDELIER TUFF, VALLES CALDERA, NEW MEXICO, USA
(2019)The 1.26 Ma Tshirege Member of the Bandelier Tuff is the second of two major (~400 km3, dense rock equivalent) compositionally zoned rhyolitic eruptions from the Valles caldera. This eruption was triggered by a dacitic ... -
Habitat mapping and multi-scale resource selection of pygmy rabbits with unmanned aerial systems
(2019)Assessing habitat quality is a primary goal of ecologists. However, evaluating habitat features that relate strongly to functional habitat quality at fine-scale resolutions across broad-scale extents is challenging. Unmanned ... -
GEOLOGY, GEOCHRONOLOGY, AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE STIBNITE-YELLOW PINE GOLD-ANTIMONY-TUNGSTEN MINING AREA, IDAHO
(2019)The Stibnite-Yellow Pine mining area in central Idaho hosts gold, antimony, and tungsten in metasedimentary strata and Idaho batholith rocks. Garnet Lu-Hf geochronology and geothermobarometry yields an Early Cretaceous ... -
Effects of soil temperature on fungal diversity and composition
(4/27/2018)Cryptic species, such as soil fungi, represent a highly diverse and undiscovered group. These organisms are responsible for important ecological processes and ecosystem services that regulate the environment and provide ... -
ENVIRONMENTAL AND BIOLOGICAL STRESSORS IN RELATION TO HONEY BEE COLONY COLLAPSE
(2018)Over the last several decades declines in pollinator populations, especially those of wild bees and other insects, have raised awareness of the economic impact pollination services have for crop production. This awareness ... -
Spatial and food web dynamics of non-native northern crayfish Orconectes virilis in Buffalo Lake, WA
(2018)Our understanding of the ecological niche freshwater crayfish occupy in aquatic food webs has expanded in recent decades. Numerous studies demonstrate the functional trophic role of crayfish can vary among endemic and ... -
REWILDING THE ORGANIZATION: AN EXPLORATION OF THE ECOSYSTEM APPROACH APPLIED TO HUMAN INSTITUTIONS
(2018)From the dawn of humanity, humans have been watching and learning from nature. We are increasingly turning to nature for inspiration, especially in the sciences and engineering where we regularly practice biomimicry and ... -
Brave new world
(Biogeochemistry, 2017-03)Recent events in the U.S. have spurred us (the undersigned editors of Biogeochemistry) to make this statement in support of science and, in particular, environmental science. Media attention over “alternative facts” and ... -
TRACKING LONG-DISTANCE DEPOSITION AND ASSIMILATION OF AIRBORNE SMELTER EMISSIONS IN NORTHEASTERN WASHINGTON LAKES USING LEAD ISOTOPE ANALYSIS
(2017)Metal pollution from mining and smelting operations into aquatic ecosystems can cause long-term biological impacts. Several studies have addressed the biological effects of both direct discharge of mining slag and diffuse ... -
Advancing Water Resources Planning, Education, and Outreach through Collaborative Modeling and Stakeholder Engagement Methods
(2017)Water resource issues are inherently challenging due to the diversity of stakeholder perspectives and values and because of the inherent and fundamental complexities of socio-ecological systems. These complexities necessitate ... -
INTERACTIONS BETWEEN NONNATIVE AMERICAN SHAD (ALOSA SAPIDISSIMA) AND FALL CHINOOK SALMON (ONCORHYNCHUS TSHAWYTSCHA) IN LOWER COLUMBIA RIVER FOOD WEBS
(2017)Lower Columbia River Food Webs have undergone many changes resulting from impoundment, introduction of nonnatives, and supplementation with hatchery salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). American Shad (Alosa sapidissima) are an ... -
THE BALANCING ACT OF FORAGING: MAMMALIAN HERBIVORES TRADE-OFF MULTIPLE RISKS WHEN SELECTING FOOD PATCHES
(2017)Animals face multiple risks while foraging such as the risk of acquiring inadequate energy from food, the risk of predation, and the risk of thermal stress. My first objective was to predict the overall perceived risk in ... -
MOLECULAR AND MICROSCOPIC INSIGHTS INTO THE RHIZOSPHERIC PROCESSES
(2017)Rhizosphere, the zone immediately adjacent to plant roots, represents a hotspot of carbon exudation, turnover, respiration, transformation and accumulation. The importance of roots for the formation of soil organic matter ... -
FORECASTING CATTLE (BOS TAURUS) DEPREDATION RISK BY RECOLONIZING GRAY WOLVES (CANIS LUPUS) IN WASHINGTON
(2017)Preventing wolf-livestock conflicts requires identifying conditions placing livestock at risk and focusing outreach and adaptive management at a local scale. Risk mapping has become a popular tool to predict and display ... -
STABLE ISOTOPE ANALYSIS METHODS DEVELOPMENT AND ASSESSMENT OF FOOD WEB DYNAMICS AFTER HYPOLIMNETIC OXYGENATION IN TWIN LAKES, WA
(2017)Line-diffuser hypolimnetic oxygenation was initiated in North Twin Lake, Washington, in 2009 to mitigate reduction in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) fishery habitat due to ... -
